Let Them Eat VealBy George JoyceImmanuel Kant once observed that “he who is cruel to animals becomes hard also in his dealings with men.” I thought about Kant when I recently learned that the Obamas had graced their dog ‘Bo’ with a dog house shaped birthday cake made out of veal – that’s right, veal – the most expensive item on many a restaurant menu.Winter is approaching and many American families find themselves struggling with severe job loss and a rather bleak vision of the normally festive holiday season. But over at the White House nothing is too good for the... (Read Full Article) (Click Here to go to Main Comments Page)
I agree with everything you said, especially the part about veal being extremely delicious. But, speaking of PETA, where are they for this recent snafu? I mean, they publicly criticized the POTUS for swatting a fly, and yet a veal cake merits no response? Maybe they were reprimanded for the super fly rebuke...
PETA may be needing a bailout! Or deadfish Emanuel has become widely known as the Duke of Duct Tape. Criticize the president and it's a sure fire tax audit. Now I know why Geithner always has that silly grin. Whatever, there seems to be a deafening silence from PETA. Maybe they've got bigger fish to fry. I hear Arnie stepped on a snail out in California.
Come on man! Give the "dog" a break. Lord Stern, Merry olde Englands' Climate Chief, says we all gotta stop enting meat and start grazing. The Obamas must not be on his E-mail list. Or his dog isn't!
However, IF you insist on criticizing Obama, do so with immunity by raggin- on his White half only. Please, leave his black half out of this else Emanuel will not be happy. Besides, with Obamas penchant for blaming "anyone else" for "everything" that goes wrong, his white half is the perfect scapegoat. Sorta like....the devil made me do it! You know what I'm sayn?
I am as anti-PETA as they come, but even I don't eat veal! Of all the cruel practices in factory-farming, veal production is the cruelest of the cruel. Are we to believe that Ms. Organic Michelle Obama is ignorant of this? And if eating veal weren't bad enough, a calf was tortured for the sake of a damn DOG?!
We're going to have to invent a whole new word for these people, because HYPOCRITE does not even begin to describe them.
At least they didn't spend $50,000.00 of the taxpayers' money to fly their dog back to Chicago for the occasion. We have to look for a silver lining somewhere.
Buying a veal birthday cake for his dog? Is that kind of expense laudable? Not in my opinion. Is that kind of expense wise in the face of America's current economic situation? Probably not. Is that kind of expense my business? As long as he isn't spending taxpayers money for it then its not. It might be stupid to spend money in that manner, but I don't want government telling me how should spend my money, and as long as he is wasting his own private funds I don't care how he spends his. In America people are allowed to spend their money on stupid things, at least for now.
Here, I believe, is the order of importance to oblamby: 1.)himself (of course) 2.)george soros 3.)the dimocratic party 4.)his family 5.)bo bo the dog 6.)the American people. It's bad enough these a$$e$ are even in the white house, but what is worse is they are still there because the American people (except those who think like A.T. readers) have not spoken out about these fools.
Yo, twellsy,
How many fingers are on one hand? You should have stopped at 5 because with D'uh O there is no #6... UNLESS you want to add ol' Scratch, Satan himself, to the list in his proper place on D'uh O's hierarchical list. Oh, wait, my bad - Satan was listed at #2.

He has appointed a "czar" to oversee the pay scales of corporate executives, a czar endowed with the power to confiscate anything he deems "excessive" -- including 100% if he sees fit. But Zer0 himself has lived off public largesse since the early days when he felt like an alien in the corporate world. > > It might be stupid to spend money in that manner, > but I don't want government telling me how should > spend my money, and as long as he is wasting his > own private funds I don't care how he spends his. I'm all for Bo getting what he can. After all he has to live with Michelle. Poor dog.
But on the symbolic side of politics shouldn't talk radio pick this up along with the net blogs? How many times has Obama used the word "sacrifice"? They're looking more and more like the Pharaohs. One Hopes 2012 will see the end of the dynasty.
Ummmm ... if you are going to slam the FLOTUS for serving a dog veal - and that IS a very valid point - don't do it using PETA/ HSUS propaganda talking points about how "cruel" veal production methods are please.
Life is not a Disney movie but portraying those of us who produce this nation's food and fiber - farmers as evil rubes or ignorant hayseeds- by Progressives and those in the media is da##ed tiresome and WRONG ! Given that I have to go earn a paycheck off the farm there is no time this am. for an Animal Science 101 primer. And FYI I am NOT a veal producer. Get a grip please .
The reason I don't eat a lot of vegetables is because I feel their pain. Imagine being a carrot and having some cold, fiendish hand come and grab you by the top and yank you, screaming, no doubt, out of the ground! Same for most vegetables. It is an excruciating death. So, I shun those poor vegetables. Beets, carrots, lettuce, having their heads literally chopped off. How terrible. Where is the PETA-like fanatics calling out for the saving of the vegetables? I believe it's coming. Right after they get rid of meat. Then what will they allow us to eat? Hmmm.
What they didn't tell you was that probably after BO ate his very rich veal doghouse, he went to the oval office and threw up on the carpet, had 3 episodes of doggy diarrhea, and then uncontrollably wizzed all over obama's golf clubs and MO's new shoes.. Life is sweet!!
I agree with your sentiments. However, it should be remembered that the Obamas do possess a rather large amount of personal wealth apart from his salary as the US President. It is really no one's business how they choose to spend it.
Moreover, as a government employee the US President does, in fact, work for the American people and as such they have a right to pass judgment on whether he is doing his job poorly or not. However, they do not have a right to decide how he spends his salary. Do you ask to see the bank records of your local police chief? Is it your business how much money a public school teacher spends on her clothing? Can you demand to see what your kid's bus driver spends on rent? Of course not. Taxpayers may decide whether public employee deserve their paychecks, but what those employees do with their paychecks on their own time is not yours, mine, or anyone else's concern. What the President does with the annual salary that is paid to him is his business. It becomes the taxpayers business when and if he begins to spend beyond that limited salary on personal matters, such as flying his wife to Chicago for a date on the taxpayer's coin. If he wants to pull $50,000.00 of his own money out of his own bank account to do so then he is free to do it. It may be stupid, but it's not really our business. jmc Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Matthew-Jerusalem Wrote: > -------------------------------------------------- > ----- > > At least they didn't spend $50,000.00 of the > > taxpayers' money to fly their dog back to > Chicago > > for the occasion. > > That'll be next year. > > > We have to look for a silver > > lining somewhere. > > Getting extremely hard to find. > > > Buying a veal birthday cake for his dog? > > > > Is that kind of expense laudable? Michelle Obama said "Let them eat veal!"
President Obama has played golf 24 times since he took office (less than 10 months). President Bush played golf 24 times in 3 years - because he placed a moratorium on his golfing, because we were at war. He thought it looked "unseemly" for the Commander-in Chief to play golf while his troops were in harms way. The Obama's don't seem to understand "appearances," do they... not "empathetic" - that quality Obama holds so dear in other people.
Pass the vomit bag please Veal Cakes and Party Hats for DOGS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This man is a bigger wussie than I even thought and that is a lot of wussie. This is the 'Leader of the Free World' ladies and gentlemen singing happy birthday to a DOG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Let's not lose our focus here. The real point is how tone deaf this administration has been.
Record unemployment will be forgotten as the "jobless recovery" will be celebrated in the White House in a few months. We are advised that 10% plus unemployment is the new norm, so get used to it. Ignore the military, prosecute our intelligence services, play golf, piss on our traditional allies and welcome dictators, then take over the parts of the economy that they do not already own. And the dog gets veal. "It's good to be the King" - Mel Brooks Clean the House in 2010, Right the Wrong in 2012.
The sheer elitism exibited by this group that has invaded the WH and pretends to represent the common man never ceases to amaze me.
I have had many dogs my entire life and I currently own (oops, I'm sorry, I am guardian for) eight. All recycled, and not a pedigree in the bunch, thank you very much! I know for a fact that dogs (even fancy ones with papers) would be just as happy with Olde Roy and a few cardboard boxes to chew on as a meal from veal. The POTUS and FLOTUS are either so stupid (a great possibility) that the do not recognize what an insult this is to the People of the US OR the People of the US are so stupid they don't recongize it as the insult that it really is (also a great possibility).
Wow. Just Wow. I suspect heads would have literally exploded at PETA if Bush had done such a thing.
I was recently graced with an unwanted pit bull puppy after my stepson could not deal with it anymore in his apartment. The wife and daughter are not dog lovers in the slightest and insisted it remain outside permanently. I said I was not having a wild pit bull in my backyard and commenced a rigorous training regimen. This dog was incorrigible. Leaped fences in a single bound and terrorized children and automobiles and elderly ladies on bikes until I had to get a shock collar or put it down. (In my neck of the woods putting an animal down does not require a trip to the vet or animal shelter). The dog really has a good personality and is good with small children, lets anyone in the house, she just will not allow anyone to walk down, ride down, or drive down her block of street. She now treats the street as if it were a hot griddle and has been a wonderful family pet that sleeps in bed with us and keeps the backyard squirrel and bird free. She is intelligent and well mannered. I don't know what her birthday is and could not care less.
Not to wish anything bad on the dog (it's not his fault), we can only hope that was Bo's reaction.

Just another expensive PR stunt from the POTUS (Photo Opportunist[s] of the United States).
Of course, the Obamas would serve a cake made of veal; they're insensitivity to animal suffering matches everything else about them, yet they are portrayed as the embodiments of caring and compassion. How many animals die every day to feed them and their perpetual-party-goers? Is PETA keeping tabs? When Sarah Palin allowed wild predator culls instituted by her Democratic predecessor to continue in Alaska, she was libeled by Democrats as an aerial wolf-killer (she isn't), but when Obama "legalized" wolf-hunting across the country this year, I didn't hear a peep from the compassionate Left. How come? What the Obamas did was not for the dog, but for the adults and their daughters. It was a show. But, we've seen a million versions of the same show from them already, and expecting them to change it is unrealistic. They live for the cameras and eternal publicity, and for sticking it to the taxpayers by whooping it up. They make the Reagans, constantly criticized for Nancy's wardrobe, look like misers. But, during a Depression (no matter how they spin it), their extravagance is truly awful. I celebrate my pets' birthdays and adoption days with extra attention, cheap toys, and little treats (if they'll eat them), and I can do it all for under five dollars and without hats, cakes, parties, or photographers. The Obamas could too, but that would not get them more front-page coverage.
Matthew, AT readers (most of us) aren't questioning what they do with their own income. We are questioning the sheer hypocrisy of it all. Us "Peons" are supposed to suck it up and sacrifice for the "common good", by having our taxes increased into double digits, yet the Obamas spend a lot of money putting a party hat on a DOG?
I don't know how it is over in Israel, but over here, only the truly wealthy and stupid give expensive birthday parties for their dogs. We who are in the middle income bracket also question their sanity. Throwing a huge birthday party for a pet is viewed as those people are a bit "touched in the head". Matthew-Jerusalem:
You're absolutely right, a President can spend his money how he wants. It would be nice if the narcissist-in-chief and his Marxist minions shared that same outlook when it comes to other Americans...but they don't. Also, do we know that he actually paid for this little party? Did he personally buy the veal, or did it come out of the WH food budget? Was it prepared elsewhere and delivered, or were WH staff tasked with making it? God, what a stupid and pointless train of thought, isn't it? How tragic that it has come to this. Debating the merits or responsibility for who paid for a veal birthday cake for a dog. Hope and Change!
Matt - If I may add onto responses to your post, may I also add that we are frustrated by the ongoing hypocrisy of how the media covers Obama compared to how they pounced on all things Bush. It's maddening. They loved to frame the Bush's as rich, lazy, mean, uncaring, indulgent while the Obama's truly care. Yet Obama goes golfing like crazy, his wife has more staff than any first lady in history, etc, etc, etc. The double standard is so glaringly obvious it's a wonder we haven't all gone blind.
anonymous,
Agreed. My first post stated that this entire thing was unwise and stupid, but as long as it was his own money I didn't really care. It makes me angry when a politician thinks he knows what to do with my money better than I do, so I am not about to do the same to someone else, even Obama. That said, I seriously doubt he spent his own money on this nonsense. He and his coterie of sycophants are so far removed from the reality of life for most Americans that even this does not surprise me. I can only hope that as more and more of the elitist narcissist shows through more Americans will see it. As for Israel, well, a few months back I read a story in YNET news about am Israeli woman that paid $32.000.00 to reserve the entire first class section of an El-Al flight from Paris to Tel Aviv so her "baby" (her dog) could fly with her instead of in the cargo hold, where pets are normally stowed. Of course that sort thing makes me feel ill, but again, its her money, not mine. anonymous Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Matthew, AT readers (most of us) aren't > questioning what they do with their own income. Wow, VEAL...the most politically incorrect meat possible....isn't veal the meat of baby cows specifically grown in limited movement pens, and therefore cruelty to animals??? PETA should be having fits. . . The Obamas are the biggest hypocrites ever, and yet, they get a pass from everyone in the MSM and most of the folks who still support them, here on the West Coast where I live... I hope and pray we can take back this government starting in 2010 and install some folks with common sense to run our country. Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum. Login or Register
