When did the lowbrows take over the culture?

By James Lewis
I've been trying to grasp for a truth that is so obvious that all of us know it. But it's not a polite truth, so we don't talk about it. Yet I think it's important to say it out loud, because it is a truth that haunts our national discourse. As a nation we are under the thumb of idiots. Not just indoctrinated, or wrong-thinking, or power-hungry, or manipulative, or even malevolent people. No, I mean real lowbrows, people who constantly fall for really stupid ideas. Neanderthals. (Look at the Governor of California just running the state budget into the ground. See what I mean? That's not just... (Read Full Article)

I've been doing just that for awhile, especially at work where it seems so many of my co-workers were absolutely mesmerized by Obambi. Whenever we would get to talking, however, and I'd try to pin them down on a subject or maybe an idea that Obambi was pitching, like national health care, they would get defensive. Very defensive, so much so that I've been called a racist and told that I didn't support Obambi not because I thought his ideas were idiotic or just plain bad for our country but because he is Black and I must hate Blacks. Sheer nonsense. But I continue to try because we can only win this one voter at a time. So keep trying. But never ever be afraid to voice your opinion about the Obambi and why his ideas are juvenile and idiotic.

Mr. Lewis, you are so right! The incredibly unwise and dangerous are now in charge because the incredibly vapid put them there. Only an intellectual without a shred of wisdom or common sense but with an inordinately high opinion of himself would believe that 52% of the vote gives him a mandate to destroy this nation.

Dear Mr. Lewis,
I'm a 47 year old graduate of US public school.
I've lived in Paris since 2001. My children raised here have learned critical thinking skills that the average US student would not even grasp.
Philosophy, logic, etc. I feel like I'm listening to some inane TV series whenever we hear American tourists in the Metro.
The kids don't believe the idiocy that comes out of their mouths.
I've been saying the same thing for years.
I loved when Walpin-gate hit and Obama got called on his providing 'I've lost faith in him' as a reason for his dismissal.
Walpin responded 'That's not a reason, it's a conclusion.'
Oh, you mean that one's feelings are not a logical reasoning method? LOL

Ludwig von Mises noticed this phenomena some time ago:

"The class of those who have the ability to think their own thoughts is separated by an unbridgeable gulf from the class of those who cannot." (The Anticapitalistic Mentality)

Most of the left is of the class who can't think their own thoughts -- they must parrot other's thoughts. They would like to copy "experts", of course; but have no ability to evaluate who is expert. Usually, therefore, they just pick someone who tells them that they are special, moral, enlightened, etc. if they believe him.

They are, in other words, suckers -- and con men recognize them as such.

This also helps explain why it is so hard to have a logical discussion with a hard leftist.

What can I say? You are absolutely right. The country seems to have gone mad, but it's actually just ignorance and absolute stupidity. We have been dumbed down by a culture that grew up on Ren and Stimpy, and now can't get enough of The Family Guy. It's sad and sick, and makes the fall of Rome look dignified. The US has become Felini Satyricon on steroids.

Posted by: NaperBille

Rush often says "Ignorance is the most expensie commodity" to which I would add "and in the US, we possess it in abundance".

It started in the 60's, with "do your own thing", "I'm OK you're OK", and the rest of the "if it feels good, do it" garbage.

The media long ago quit reporting the news and began manufacturing it. Academia is a joke. Combined, how many times do we see and hear them cite "experts" who are actually too dumb to come in out of the rain? It only works because critical thinking is punished as radical, meanspirited, bigoted, racist etc, etc, etc.

Barack Obama is the culmination of all that has gone wrong with our culture; an emperor with no clothes.

I couldn't agree more with Mr Lewis that the time to suffer fools gladly has long since passed. Political Correctness has far outlived its usefulness and, since everyone is "offended" by one thing or another, it's long past time to say "who cares" (the left does it all the time).

No one is less tolerant than a liberal and unrestricted diversity, when followed to its logical conclusion, is essentially anarchy.

The madness must be stopped.

The totally unjustified countless hours of orgasmic grief that the MSM is currently spewing out over the death of a drug addicted, child abusing, homosexual. children buying, talented black singer/songwriter who underwent countless narcissistic plastic surgeries to try to turn himself in to a white woman is a clear case in point to support your theory.

"Legalizing drugs. That's really stupid." - actually, it would be very smart, and about time. It would save untold billions of dollars in law-enforcement, courts, and incarceration. Legalized drugs may cause problems, but I doubt it would even come close to the problems we now have with drug prohibition. Remember what we got with alcohol prohibition? Did it solve any of the problems of alcohol abuse?

With drug prohibition, we have bloated courts, jails, and prisons, full of people there for simple drug possesion. We have unconstitutional search and seizure of property (charging money, houses, land, etc. with a "crime"), with that method expanding to include other crimes (like automobile confiscation of suspected prostitution solicitors). And this with only an accusation of a crime...no evidence, trial or conviction is necessary. In fact, if you are innocent and want to get your money or property back, YOU have to go to court and have to prove IT WASN'T involved in a crime. That, my friend, is not only "really stupid", but criminal itself.

Add to that, buy Red. No GE or GM. AARP contributes millions to the DNC. Why do you need it? I don't. Progressive Auto Insurance also gives millions to DNC. Why go to Hollywood Liberal movies that insult your values and intellect . Forget Ophra, Martha and The View. We can change the world when we buy Red. and promote Red companies and products. Seek them out.

Get ride of the jerks in Congress. Incourage the good Congressmen. They need our support. Vote, Vote, Vote.

Obama is so dangerous as well as all the liberals that surround him. David Axelrode's parents were members of the Socialist party. (OUTRAGEOUS) I think of him as Rasputin in the White House. Please read the American Thinker article "Obama, the African Colonial" 6/25/09. That will give you a new insight into the man.

Get a copy of Ayn Rands, Atlas Shrugged. Get the Cliffnotes for a better understanding of what's going on here. She must have been a prophet. I've underlined a lot and reread them often.

I have been telling people for years: Because only wicked, stupid politicians support abortion, one has to be a wicked, stupid voter to vote for them, because it is a metaphysical certainty that when wicked, stupid people are in public office, they will turn out to be liars, traitors, thieves, etc. All in addition to the obvious evil of being pro-abortion.

And I have been proven right literally hundreds of times, as pro-abortion politicians vote to throw the borders open, to "tax the rich" (i.e., everybody), gut the military, etc., etc.

A new party - 2ARMS-Second American Revolution Movement Society

My reasoning is that neither of the two dominant political parties heed the wishes of the common American and, as a result, our last fifteen or so cycles of elected misrepresentatives pay even less attention to their constituents.

Particularly during the vote for the TARP funding last year when the weasels acknowledged overwhelming objection from the american citizens, um, consumers (we're no longer citizens, only consumers in their minds).

My update to the idea results from some of the feedback I received to the post. It is also prompted by my viewing earlier this evening (06/24/09), between Barney Frank and Bill O'Reilly on Fox (yeah, I know). In this interview, Barney Frank admitted, point blank, that what they have been doing is not in the constitution "it's discretionary".

The real point I wanted to make when I first proposed the idea was to create a "non"-party. What would be the effect if every registered voter who is absolutely disgusted with the whole false democrat/republican thing (including those of independent, green, socialist, and any other stripe) were to unite in declaring themselves a member of an entirely fictional party; one with a name that is very clear on it's intent?

What would be the effect as various State Registrars notice an increase in party affiliation with a totally unknown, organic, and fictional party as they make their various reports to their respective States and the federal government?

I think, though I may be wrong, that many americans see very little difference between democrats and republicans anymore. But have registered as one or the other for a common reason...someone they individually respected was. Think on that, and deep down, you would admit to it. With that same respect, is your party the same as it once was?

I propose a real revolution. One that can be accomplished without bullets, without hatred, but with firm conviction that our government has exceeded, at every level, their circumscribed Constitutional boundaries. One that will definitely be noticed by all the pollsters, political parties and politicians.

If you are truly disgusted with both parties and really want to change the system, change your voter registration to make your party affiliation "2ARMS-Second American Revolution Movement Society".

There are no dues, no mailers, no one will call, you won't get campaign literature, or any requests for contributions. At least not legitimately. Better yet, at present, there are no 2ARMS Candidates for office.

To be a true 2ARMS member you only have three obligations.
1. Register in your state as a 2ARMS party member.
2. Swear to vote against any incumbent in any federal office for 10 years.
3. Vote your conscience.

“Or maybe there's such a thing as learned stupidity”.

Believe it! Outcomes-based education (OBE) has been around for at least 20 years now and can best be understood in this quote from Wikipedia:

“Liberal politicians often support OBE because of its vision of high standards for all groups. Conservatives like the idea of measuring outputs rather than inputs (such as money spent or number of hours of lecture given) and insisting that students demonstrate learning rather than just showing up.”

No matter how much they dress it up with convoluted double-speak, OBE has only one overriding goal: the egalitarian “outcome of results” as it pertains to “groups”. They have found that through such educational chicanery as “whole language”, “project-based learning”, etc., it is much easier to achieve equal outcomes by dumbing-down students.

Many well-meaning educators have been either tricked or coerced into this hoax.

As a young father in the early nineties, I totally rejected the notion of “dumbing-down”. After-all, who in their right mind would advocate for a dumber population??

Of course, now I realize that it is same group of left-minded interests who advocate for “affordable housing” (for groups), affirmative action, socialized medical care, multiculturalism, liberation theology, higher taxes, lower defense spending, nationalized industries and redistribution of wealth.

And the end result of all of this? The first outcomes-based POTUS, Obozo The Great! ....Sigh.

In a very real sense reality is beginning to bite hard at the heels of those who believe, truly believe, that the masses are too stupid to see where they are being led.

I read the astonishing-or not-news about the muzzling of a head EPA researcher, for the cardinal sin of telling the truth-scientific facts be damned.

Now, color me biased, but the fact that it was a Caltech graduate in physics with a Phd from MIT who is the source of all this angst(for those who worship at the altar of global warming) was the icing on the cake for me. As the mother of two sons, recently graduated from these two powerhouses, I take special pleasure in citing his expertise. My money was indeed well spent....

The fact of the matter is that their own ! head scientist, pedigreed from two leading scientific institutions in the world, can't even get through to them. Perhaps the only thing that will is an enraged public bent on deposing them, albeit against their wills.

When ideology trumps fact based science we are in the midst of the fight of our lives. The hard left, of which Obama is its Messiah, will stop at nothing to impose their agenda.
Nothing.

BRAVO, BRAVO, BRAVO! Mr. Lewis, you have taken my exact thoughts and sentiments and perfectly vocalized them in this article. After attempting to enter the political fray last year, I learned that the corporate ignorance of the electorate was beyond imagination. In fact, it approaches something out of a fable or inane joke! I too, have adopted the philosophy that perhaps the most useful contribution I can make to the survival of my country was to become an educator, someone who piques the blockhead mentality that is so rampant among the zombies that muddle through life in the U.S. Thank you for stating the problem so eloquently!

"We haven't seen the effect (yet) on our pocketbooks. There's food in the stores still, and housing has gotten cheaper. But let Obama's budget affect our wallets directly and just watch the voters explode with rage. "

And that is the problem it hasn't cost them anything, at least not yet. I wonder how many unemployed people would vote for the Floppy Eared Street Pimp now? There is always a reckoning, eventually the bill comes due, when that happens The One, His Teleprompter, His advisers, His party, are going to get kicked to the curb. I like watching the drama unfold and noticing the morons seem to be more and more uncomfortable as the days add up.

The wheels on the wagon are starting to give out, soon there will be a cannibalistic feast as the Democraps start blaming each other for the debacles. Revoke, Rescind and Eliminate will be the words you will hear a lot in the next few months, years.

"...the only reason Americans aren't in open rebellion yet is that half of them can't believe it's happening, and the other half are idiots."

I'm a member of the former group. The lunacy is coming so rapidly on so many fronts, I'm literally overwhelmed. It's probably intentional. The left holds most positions of power, but it's a minority. Therefore, it normally uses subterfuge to achieve its goals. Right now it holds most of the cards, so it can afford to engage in the equivalent of a combined arms assault on America.

I don't like using the word, but I believe "idiot" is an apt word for those who support socialism. One can live off the labor of others for a time, but it always, ALWAYS results in less for everyone in the long term.

Idiot is defined as a "foolish or stupid person."

Foolish is defined as "lacking in sense, judgment, or discretion."

Discretion is defined as the "ability to make responsible decisions."

Yep, they're idiots.

Thank you for finally saying it: WE HAVE A DUMBDOWN SOCIETY. It is incredible to those of us with half a brain how anyone can trust the madness coming out of Washington. I have seen the decadence in Academia for the past thirty years. I was a Chemistry professor in a "liberal arts" Chicago insitution, when this college decided to accept lower scores from incoming students (those famous Chicago schools) and then give them remedial help. Many of my freshman students found General Chemistry too difficult but, their problem was that they were not capable of reading, understanding, and using simple mathematical skills (like percentages). In addition, I became very involved in the Curriculum committee. The required courses I had taken when in college were long go ne in the core curriculum of this institution. I personally fought the battle to return the "core curriculum" back to basics: English, Foreign language, Philosophy, History, Math, Science, Fine Arts. It was an uphill battle against the PHD morons that wanted an open curriculum, some even in favor of students choosing what to learn. I won that battle but paid for it later as the administration had me blacklisted. I had organized and taught a course in Environmental Chemistry but was questioned by those that had read Al Gore's Earth is on the Balance. In other words, many idiots chose to believe a politician without an ounce of scientific training over a PhD Chemistry professor (nine years of scientific training plus one year postdoctoral position).

Today I am happily retired but very involved in the political situation. The struggle still goes on: just recently I volunteered to tutor Chemistry to young people in our library, only to be completely ignored by the chief Librarian. We have two high schools in the area and I know they cannot find appropriate Chemistry teachers. I then contacted my district's county commissioner but after one week all I have is a short note from his assistant to inform me he is very busy. This battle is not over! I have connections and this commissioner will hear me as well as many other retired well educated professionals willing to help educate our youth. We pay the taxes to fund the library and pay the salaries. The message here is: DEMAND RESPONSIBLE GOVERNMENT IN YOUR COMMUNITY----We pay the taxes and they work for us. Remind these "little politicians" we are the bosses; and if they do not care to listen, vote them out of office.

Thanks for a great piece Mr. Lewis. I think that I read somewhere that the bigger the crowd the lower the IQ. That being said, I was totally shocked after the campaign that the Kenyan could be elected. After delegating important decisions to a higher pay grade and his associations, it's McCain in a landslide. But this is not the first time I have been shocked though. I remember a PBS special documenting the lives of G. Bush and the young B. Clinton. Folks, B. Clinton wasn't even worthy to tie G. Bush's boots. Same with McCain and the Kenyan, Compare the two lives and ditto. McCain's life is way more worth living. As long as the Kenyan is our president we will continue to be a laughingstock in the "international community". ( I cringe when ever the Kenyan says that). I guess that is his higher authority. We may have a way to stop this train. It is called the constitution. Is the Kenyan eligible?

the asset backed, debt fueled, derivative based economy continues to deteriorate.

as local, state and federal tax revenue continues to plummet mathematics will seize the day. and all the money printing and monetization of the yield curve will will fail to stimulate the economy. this will force the bureaucracy to war against the people for money to maintain their lifestyle. connect the dots with the rest.

my view is that the asset backed, debt fueled, derivative based american economy is over. the transition to something new will be brutal for most of the country.

There are no lowbrows in charge here, although I agree with the sentiment. It takes a real lack of intelligence to make things this bad on purpose. Take a look at the schools they went to. Compare those to the schools of the administration which got us into Viet Nam and ran it so poorly. Then throw in Hoover and the administration which got the Great Depression started and kept it going. They are all went to schools in the northeast, the Ivy League schools. Arnold, the exception, went to UCLA, but he has had an entire state helping that downfall. It's higher education which has gone lowbrow.

So what are the non-stupid ideas we can agree with? Week after week, day after day were deluged with idiotic ideas and laws meant only to harm Americans and increase the power of government. Name me one idea or law this Democrat Congress abetted by this power hungry POTUS have put forward that is worth supporting? This is what makes it so unbelievable to anyone with any sense. How could a whole group come up with only dangerous non survival ideas? It boggles the mind. It does make those who disagree seem like they are the ones unhinged when you can't find one thing to agree with. It's lunacy run amok. This is one of the reason's Republicans in the Congress have had a hard time getting their footing. How do you fight every idiotic idea that comes out of the mouths of fools who lie to the public with the media megaphone repeating every lie. I say NO to every idea and every law put forth by these monsters and I don't care if it sounds like leftards...why? Because my objections are based on truth not the lies the leftards based their objections on. While your at it show me one objection the left had to Bush that was based on caring about this country. Every leftard objection had only one goal to make people hate Bush and put the Dem's back in power. As a conservative I had objections about some of Bush's policies and the Republicans too but I didn't need to base my objections on lies to disagree, there's the difference.

Soooooo totally true! Look at last night. Congress is on the brink of passing this horrible cap and trade full unemployment law and all you got was Michael Jackson's death. Even Fox news fell for this dribble. Now they can quietly vote on it today and we can listen to "Beat it" for the 1000th time. We don't have to preserve our bodies for 500 years like they did in the movie IDIOCRACY. We are living it.

That all being said for those of you who think the Republicans can win back the house in 2010 I would not get my hopes up. When it comes to marketing and voter corruption the Dems are way ahead of the game. It reminds me of the joke about the drunk who sits at the bar and looks down to see his private part hanging out. He yells to the bartender, "Look Joe, A Snake!" Joe grabs a hammer and smacks it. The drunk yells "Hit it again Joe, it bit me!". A lot of people are so ignorant and stupid they will never understand the real source of their pain no matter how bad it gets. It worked for FDR in the 30's. It will probably work for Obama, Nancy and Harry now.

Lastly, I just turned on TV to see if I could find any real news. My cable is out. Now tell me there is no God! LOL

When you have a country that has lost its moral bearing, a divorce rate of 50%, an illegal drug problem, citizens who just don't care, a movement to get rid of God from daily life, lack of integrity and honesty in business, lack of civility, lack of respect for others, this is the result. A country once blessed by God is loosing it's blessing because the country has turned it's back God.

America's gene pool has gotten shallower since we decided to make everything "safe". If mommy can't keep her crotchfruit from sticking a knife in the electric socket, the kid gets what he deserves.

Since when?

Since the "high brows" followed their Leftist leanings into absurd EXTREMISM.

Since America's "every man" presumed the contorted moral stance as "tolerant", accepting progressive lunacy as logic in order to feel comfortable within society's altered reality.

Since people chose the comforts of selfish interests at the expense of civil obligations as cooperative responsibility.

No one can claim being "The Forgotten Man" in this scenario. We all got wet, and the majority chose to ride the tide with the pride of popularity for "fitting in where it counts".

I read the Santa Clara Labor Attorney Diamond's essays written before the POTUS campaign went into full throttle. His research exposing candidate Obama as the Ayers et.al. tool predated newspaper articles. The Marxists already conquered the academic world of higher education. Conquering the Chicago pubilc education system so as to become authoritarians of all children was specifically the Obama/Ayers "gift" that keeps on giving, having now proven the model to THOROUGHLY dumb down not only the children, but their teachers and thereby conquer society from the grassroots, teacher unions trumping parents.

I momentarily bristled at the "low brow" subject heading, anticipating another bash towards rednecks, NOT in any way your message, thank you. Note well that more often than not, it's the so-called Bubba rednecks holding on to their sensibilities rather than comply with the coercion of authoritative sophistry to comply or be exterminated as undesirables by corrupted sophisticates. Inner Cities, awake and think again. Don't accept propaganda at face value. Research! Flyover America, take heed to read our nation's originating documents and hold our politicians feet to the fire of truth rather than accept their pervasive political corruption.

Our Constitution IS the Supreme Law of the Land and trumps subsequent legislation, SUBSEQUENT judicial "precedence", and executive orders.

As government exceeds its authority, we citizens must retain hold on our Constitutional Rights. Never accept authoritarianism in silence; we are American citizens who love our LEGAL national heritage and demand to provide it intact to our children.
